Author: david brin book title: earth publisher: bantam books year: 1990 isbn: 0-553-07064-9 weaving an epic of complex dimensions, david brin plaits initially divergent story lines, all set in the year 2038, into an outstandingly satisfying novel. at the center is a type of mystery: after a failed murder attempt, a group of people try to save the victim, recover the murder weapon, identify the guilty party and fend off other assassins, all the while being led through n+1 plot twists — each with a sense of overhanging doom, because the intended victim is gaea, earth herself. the struggle to save the planet gives brin the occasion to recap recent global events: a world war fought to wrest all caches of Secret information from the grip of an elite few; a series of ecological disasters brought about by environmental abuse; and the effects of a universal interactive data network on beginning to turn the world into a true global village. fully dimensional and engaging characters with plausible motivations bring drama to these scenarios. brin’s exciting prose style will probably make this a hugo nominee, and will certainly keep readers turning pages..

    direct link Size: 600 KB

Author: laura lippman book title: another thing to fall the california dream weavers have invaded charm city with their cameras, their stars, and their controversy… when private investigator tess monaghan literally runs into the crew of the fledgling tv series mann of steel while sculling, she expects sharp words and evil looks, not an assignment. but the company has been plagued by a series of disturbing incidents since its arrival on location in baltimore: bad press, union threats, and small, costly on-set “accidents” that have wreaked havoc with its shooting schedule. as a result, mann’s creator, flip tumulty, the son of a hollywood legend, is worried for the safety of his young female lead, selene waites, and asks tess to serve as her bodyguard/babysitter. tumulty’s concern may be well founded. not long ago a baltimore man was discovered dead in his own home, surrounded by photos of the beautiful, difficult superstar-in-the-making. in the past, tess has had enough trouble guarding her own body. keeping a spoiled movie princess under wraps may be more than she can handle – even with the help of tess’s icily unflappable friend whitney – since selene is not as naive as everyone seems to think, and far more devious than she initially appears to be. this is not tess’s world. and these are not her kind of people, with their vanities, their self-serving agendas and invented personas, and their remarkably skewed visions of reality – from the series’ aging, shallow, former pretty-boy leading man to its resentful, always-on-the-make cowriter to the officious young assistant who may be too hungry for her own good. but the fish-out-of-water p.i. is abruptly pulled back in by an occurrence she’s all too familiar with – murder. suddenly the wall of secrets around mann of steel is in danger of toppling, leaving shattered dreams, careers, and lives scattered among the ruins – a catastrophe that threatens the people tess cares about… and the city she loves..

  13. Roy The God of Small Things fb2

    direct link Size: 634 KB

Author: arundhati roy book title: the god of small things this highly stylized novel tells the story of one very fractured family from the southernmost tip of india. here is an unhappy family unhappy in its own way, and through flashbacks and flashforwards the god of small things unfolds the secrets of these characters' unhappiness. first-time novelist arundhati roy twists and reshapes language to create an arresting, startling sort of precision. the average reader of mainstream fiction may have a tough time working through roy's prose, but those with a more literary bent to their usual fiction inclinations should find the initial struggle through the dense prose a worthy price for this lushly tragic tale. rahel and estha are fraternal twins whose emotional connection to one another is stronger than that of most siblings: esthappen and rahel thought of themselves together as me, and separately, individually as we or us. as though they were a rare breed of siamese twins, physically separate, but with joint identities. now, these years later, rahel has a memory of waking up one night giggling at estha's funny dream. she has other memories too that she has no right to have. their childhood household hums with hidden antagonisms and pains that only family members can give one another. blind mammachi, the twins' grandmother and founder of paradise pickles & preserves, is a violin-playing widow who suffered years of abuse at the hands of her highly respected husband, and who has a fierce one-sided oedipal connection with her son, chacko. baby kochamma, rahel and estha's grandaunt, nurses deep-seated bitterness for a lifetime of unrequited love, a bitterness that plays out slyly against everyone in the family; in her youth she fell in love with an irish roman-catholic priest and converted to his faith to win him, while he eventually converted to hinduism. chacko, divorced from his english wife and separated from his daughter since her infancy, runs the pickle factory with a capitalist's hand, self-deluding himself all the while that he is a communist at heart even as he flirts with and beds his female employees. ammu, the twins' mother, is a divorcee who fled her husband's alcoholism and impossible demands, a woman with a streak of wildness that the children sense and dread and that will be her and her family's undoing. the family's tragedy revolves around the visit of chacko's ex-wife, widowed by her second husband, and his daughter, sophie mol. it is within the context of their visit that estha will experience the one horrible thing that should never happen to a child, during their visit that ammu will come to love by night the man the children love by day, and during their visit that sophie mol will die. her death, and the fate of the twins' beloved untouchable velutha, will forever alter the course of the lives of all the members of the family, sending them each off on spinning trajectories of regret and pain. the story reveals itself not in traditional narrative order, but in jumps through time, wending its way through rahel's memories and attempts at understanding the hand fate dealt her family. the god of small things has been favorable reviewed all over the place, generating a lot of excitement in the current literary establishment. what you think of it will depend heavily on your opinion of roy's prose style – is it ostentatious, or is it brilliant? whether or not you fall in love with her style, the truth of the heartbreaking story she tells and the lovable/hate-able characters who people it make this novel an experience not to be missed..

  15. Mieville Perdido Street Station fb2

    direct link Size: 1.5 Mb

Author: china mieville book title: perdido street station amazon.com review when mae west said, "too much of a good thing can be wonderful," she could have been talking about china miéville's perdido street station. the novel's publication met with a burst of extravagant praise from big name authors and was almost instantly a multiaward finalist. you expect hyperbole in blurbs; and sometimes unworthy books win awards, so nominations don't necessarily mean much. but perdido street station deserves the acclaim. it's ambitious and brilliant and-rarity of rarities-sui generis. its clearest influences are mervyn peake's gormenghast trilogy and m. john harrison's viriconium books, but it isn't much like them. it's dickensian in scope, but fast-paced and modern. it's a love song for cities, and it packs a world into its strange, sprawling, steam-punky city of new crobuzon. it can be read with equal validity as fantasy, science fiction, horror, or slipstream. it's got love, loss, crime, sex, riots, mad scientists, drugs, art, corruption, demons, dreams, obsession, magic, aliens, subversion, torture, dirigibles, romantic outlaws, artificial intelligence, and dangerous cults. generous, gaudy, grand, grotesque, gigantic, grim, grimy, and glorious, perdito street station is a bloody fascinating book. it's also so massive that you may begin to feel you're getting too much of a good thing; just slow down and enjoy. yes, but what is perdido street station about? to oversimplify: the eccentric scientist isaac dan der grimnebulin is hired to restore the power of flight to a cruelly de-winged birdman. isaac's Secret lover is lin, an artist of the khepri, a humano-insectoid race; theirs is a forbidden relationship. lin is hired (rather against her will) by a mysterious crime boss to capture his horrifying likeness in the unique khepri art form. isaac's quest for flying things to study leads to verification of his controversial unified theory of the strange sciences of his world. it also brings him an odd, unknown grub stolen from a Secret government experiment so perilous it is sold to a ruthless drug lord-the same crime boss who hired lin. the grub emerges from its cocoon, becomes an extraordinarily dangerous monster, and escapes isaac's lab to ravage new crobuzon, even as his discovery becomes known to a hidden, powerful, and sinister intelligence. lin disappears and isaac finds himself pursued by the monster, the drug lord, the government and armies of new crobuzon, and other, more bizarre factions, not all confined to his world. -cynthia ward from publishers weekly king rat (1999), mi‚ville's much-praised first novel of urban fantasy/horror, was just a palate-teaser for this appetizing, if extravagant, stew of genre themes. its setting, new crobuzon, is an audaciously imagined milieu: a city with the dimensions of a world, home to a polyglot civilization of wildly varied species and overlapping and interpenetrating cultures. seeking to prove his unified energy theory as it relates to organic and mechanical forms, rogue scientist isaac dan der grimnebulin tries to restore the power of flight to yagharek, a member of the garuda race cruelly shorn of its wings. isaac's lover, lin, unconsciously mimics his scientific pursuits when she takes on the seemingly impossible commission of sculpting a patron whose body is a riot of grotesquely mutated and spliced appendages. their social life is one huge, postgraduate bull session with friends and associates-until a nightmare-inducing grub escapes from isaac's lab and transforms into a flying monster that imperils the city. this accident precipitates a political crisis, initiates an action-packed manhunt for isaac and introduces hordes of vividly imagined beings who inhabit the twilight zone between science and sorcery. mi‚ville's canvas is so breathtakingly broad that the details of individual subplots and characters sometime lose their definition. but it is also generous enough to accommodate large dollops of aesthetics, scientific discussion and quest fantasy in an impressive and ultimately pleasing epic..

  16. Lyall The Conduct of Major Maxim fb2

    direct link Size: 494 KB

Author: gavin lyall book title: the conduct of major maxim reviewed by hilary williamson i've enjoyed all of gavin lyall's standalone thrillers – stories like midnight plus one, the most dangerous game, and the wrong side of the sky – but especially like his major maxim series. ex-sas harry maxim, the very model of a modern military gentleman, is straight as an arrow, which does not serve him well when involved with politicians and spies – which he is all too often. he gets into very serious trouble in every episode, but somehow always comes through with his integrity intact. harry's wife jenny died in a bombed plane and his parents help him raise his son chris – he's continually guilt-ridden when his job prevents him from spending time with his son. at this point in the series, harry maxim is seconded to 10 downing street, working for the lazy but very wily george harbinger, and often in liaison (and in conflict) with the devious, somewhat amoral, security service agent agnes algar – of course, their prickly relationship slowly and steadily develops into something stronger, to the initial dismay of both parties. this story starts with analysts monitoring east german news and speculating about a rising political star named gustav eismark. we see an old woman, a talented but damaged musician, who lives in the country and teaches piano. then harry meets an old army friend who asks for his help for a deserter, ron blagg, who got involved in a special op on the request of a woman, mrs. howard, he believed was a british agent. two people died in germany, blagg fled, and now he wants in from the cold. harry tries to help him. agnes is called to a high level meeting 'to consider the conduct of major h. r. maxim'. his digging into blagg's story has 'started a constitutional crisis'. the plot quickly thickens, and the search is on for information obtained by the now dead mrs. howard. harry heads to germany, and then works under the radar, helped by agnes. when harry tells agnes the Secret that eismark had been trying so hard to hide, she replies 'god almighty' to which his answer is, 'he's seen worse in his time.' if you haven't met major maxim yet, then you really should start reading this thrilling military/spy series..

    direct link Size: 549 KB

Author: gavin lyall book title: the crocus list british army major harry maxim has just completed resistance training in preparation against a possible russian military action on england, when suddenly the president of the u.s. is shot at in london by somebody using a russian rifle. when there is no official response to this provocative act, maxim takes the reconnaissance initiative. with the initially half-hearted help of his friend george harbinger of the ministry of defense, he sets out to track down the originators of the assassination attempt. he comes to suspect early on that the act was neither perpetrated by the russians nor actually aimed at the president, and the trail which leads him to the crocus list and its Secret operations takes him from london to washington, st. louis and east berlin. this third adventure featuring the immensely likable major (after the Secret servant and the conduct of major maxim) brims with intelligence and spirit. it's an irrepressible, entertaining and thought-provoking jaunt through the ins and outs of the international espionage trade..

  18. Yong The Book and The Sword fb2

    direct link Size: 1.2 Mb

Author: jin yong book title: the book and the sword in the book and sword, louis cha revives the legend about the great eighteenth-century manchu emperor qianlong which claims that he was in fact not a manchu but a han chinese as a result of a "baby swap." the novel is panoramic in scope and includes the fantastical elements for which cha is well-known: Secret societies, kungfu masters, a lost desert city guarded by wolf packs, and the mysterious fragrant princess. *** like the martial art heroes that he writes about, louis cha is a legend in his own time. better known to his chinese fans by his pen name of jin yong, cha is the unrivaled giant of the modern martial arts (wuxia) genre. his novels were initially written for serialization in his own ming pao newspaper, which was published in hong kong. however, they became so popular that they were reprinted in chinese newspapers around the world. his novels, which total fourteen, were subsequently published in book form. his accomplishment was magnified by the fact that during this time mainland china was a literary desert because communist rigidity only allowed publication of titles that conformed to socialist realism, i.e, it had to help build socialist ideals. definitely, no room for escapist kung fu adventures there. alas, in spite of his stature, his works were only accessible to chinese readers. although the novels were initially written between 1955 and 1972, it was not until 1997 that the english translation of "the deer and the cauldron" was published by oxford university press (and that was only the first volume of three!). although that translation of cha's last and, many argue, his best novel was excellent, it still left something to be desired because "the deer and the cauldron" was not representative of the genre. therefore, it is with great excitement that we awaited the publication of the "the book and the sword", cha's first novel earlier this year. the novel was initially translated and published on the web by graham earnshaw in 2001 but it was picked up by oxford university press in 2003 and edited by rachel may and john minford. mindford was the translator for "the deer and the cauldron". the book finally became available earlier this year. "the book and the sword" takes place during the reign of emperor qian long (1735-1795) of the qing dynasty. the qing dynasty had been founded by the manchus almost 100 years earlier. by this time the manchu rulers, whose homeland was in the north east of present day china, had been thoroughly sinicised. qian long himself was a great patron and practitioner of chinese culture. nevertheless, there were still resistance groups formed by the han majority. the story follows one of these Secret societies, the red flower society, whose members are determined to overthrow the qing. the members of the society are a colorful bunch of characters, most of whom are men but they also include several women in their ranks (the woman are all beautiful and deadly, of course). the members come from a cross section of the society but have been brought together by their wilingness to risk life and limb to protect the weak and fight for justice. the newly elected leader of the society, helmsman chen, is an unlikely hero whose manners and knowledge reveal a priviledged upbringing as the son of a former prime minister. we join the group as they repeatedly fail to free one of their own, rolling thunder wen, who is being escorted to the capital under heavy guard. rolling thunder, you see, happens to know about a deadly secret: that the emperor was actually born to a han family but swapped with a manchu baby girl. helmsman chen discovers this Secret himself soon enough and hopes to convince the emperor himself to evict the manchus. what chen doesn't know, however, is that the origin of the emperor is related to his own selection as the leader of the red flower society. much of the action actually takes place in the western border of china in present day xinjiang, home of the uighurs, whom helmsman chen befriends and helps on various occasions. since qian long was in the process of bringing the uighur land under his empire, the uighurs and chen had a common enemy in the emperor. it is through these relationships with the uighurs that chen encounters the book and sword of the title. although these two items are not directly related to his quest for the manchu overthrow, they do lead him to two beautiful uighur sisters and later painful choices between love for a woman and love for country. those who have never read a wuxia novel are in for a surprise. although frequent fight scenes featuring incredible acrobatics, swordmanship, and good old kung fu skills are present as expected, they are really not the most important part of the story. in fact, the book is very much like a typical hong kong movie where the movie director has never bothered to decide whether the movie is a comedy or drama, a kung fu spectacular or a tender love story, an uplifting message-filled narrative or horror movie. it is simply all of that and it switches between them at great speed. in this case, "the book and the sword" features several romantic pairings between leading characters. a theme central to all wuxia novels, that of loyalty, is tightly woven into the novel. not just loyalty to the cause but also to the group and to one's kung fu master. the plot moves a mile a minute across various locales throughout china and spends quite a bit of time in the desert of xinjiang, a area featured quite prominently in the "crouching tiger, hidden dragon" and "hero" movies. louis cha clearly is a student of chinese history and has interwoven several real life personalities of the time, including the legendary fragrant princess, an uighur girl so enchantingly beautiful that she naturally smelled like flowers. the core of plot itself, that qian long was a han chinese, is a well-known but unsubstantiated rumor. i only wish that cha had spent more time describing qian long's own struggle with his new found identity. at it is, he seems to be too eager to sweep it under the rug, which seems incongruous with the historical fact that he became a great emperor admired by all chinese. in contrast, cha presents emperor kang xi (qian long's grandfather) in a more positive light in "the deer and the cauldron". in summary, we strongly recommend "the book and the sword" to all readers. the book is about 500 pages long which is much more accessible than the three-volume "the deer and the cauldron". the long wait has not been in vain. now if they would just hurry up and finish translating the other twelve novels. in my lifetime..
